My Five Haircare Heroes

I don’t tend to cover haircare on the blog a lot.

That’s largely because I tend not to change up the products I use very often. I have quite greasy hair that dries out at the tips and has a tendency to get knotty very easily. That means I don’t get on well with a lot of products. So, when I find something that works, I stick to it.

In light of this, I wanted to cover of my five haircare heroes – the products that I religiously use and don’t see changing up anytime soon.

As you can see, there’s a mix of brands and price points in here. I don’t mind paying a lot for my haircare, but I’ve been lucky to pick up a few good drug store lines over the years.

In the shower

When I went back to brunette (from red) I noticed that my greasy hair was slightly greasier. My old shampoo (Herbal Essences) wasn’t good enough to keep the oil at bay and I was facing going back to washing my hair daily. Dry shampoo wasn’t even good enough to keep up. I came across the L’Oreal Extraordinary Clay* one day and haven’t been back since. This is my third bottle and given the price and performance I see no reason to try something else. It’s also frequently on offer so I never pay full price for it

It keeps my hair going for the two days no problem. I still need to use a little dry shampoo underneath just to give it a boost but that’s fine by me. Dry shampoo has been a staple now for over ten years for me.

In terms of conditioner, because of the oiliness of my hair I do have to be careful. A lot of conditioners I’ve tried weigh down my hair loads or have no visible effect on the condition of my hair. However the L’Occitane Repair Conditioner actually does. It smells amazing and leaves my hair softer, smoother and less prone to knots. The first few times you use it you can really smell in it your hair and I found myself just sniffing my hair randomly. I use this once or twice a week and love the condition it leaves my hair in.

It’s not the cheapest, but I find a bottle will last me a good six months. I’ve tried the shampoo, but sadly it’s way too heavy for my hair. Where I need the repairing is on the mid to ends of my hair but if you struggle with poor condition all over you may find the shampoo worth a try. They sell minis of both the shampoo and conditioner in their stores, so you can give them a try before buying the full size.

Their Three Minute Miracle Conditioner used to be my go to in the days where I was washing, drying and straightening my hair daily. I used to use this nearly every day and it kept my hair from looking horrifically frazzled.

Out of the shower

I’m not big on lots of styling products. Again, due to the oiliness of my hair.

Despite it being a real crucial step I’ve never spent too much time on selecting a heat protector. I just want something that smells okay, doesn’t weigh my hair down and protects my hair. The Garnier Ultimate Blends is a great little product that does just that. This is probably my third bottle and each one lasts around six months and I see no reason to try anything new.

For evenings out I like to finish off my style with a serum or oil. This Josh Wood oil that can be used on wet or dry hair finishes off my style perfectly. It smoothes out my hair and gives it some shine without looking oily. Since I stopped straightening my hair I’ve felt I needed something just to make my hair look finished, and it does just that.

Special mention goes to Beauty Protector

Back when I used to subscribe to Birchbox, I received some of their Beauty Protector heat protection spray. I absolutely loved this stuff. It smells amazing and made my hair feel amazing all while protecting it from the heat. However at £21 it’s a massive splurge and the bottle itself never seemed to last all that long.

Avoiding the shower

This was the best way I could sum up the final product – dry shampoo!

I’ve had a long quest to find a dry shampoo that actually works on my hair. For years I thought something was with wrong me because I’d hear people raving about Batiste whereas I thought it was utter rubbish and did nothing other than make my hair look white.

I finally stumbled upon Klorane* in the past few years and absolutely love this stuff. You don’t need loads of this to get rid of oil and give your hair a lovely boost. Whenever I go to France I always make sure to go to a Carrefour because they always have twin packs of this on special offer and it’s so much cheaper than over here.

The only thing I would point out is to get the aerosol and not the powder variety as pictured above. This was ordered in error and is by far the worst product I’ve ever used. It’s basically like putting talc all over your hair and leaves it (and your room) covered in dust. Not good at all.
